This essential course provides comprehensive training on how to recognize and respond to signs of child abuse and neglect. It is designed for professionals working with children, as well as others involved in child welfare.

- Definitions under Ohio State Law
The course defines what constitutes “abuse,” “maltreatment,” and “neglect” according to the Ohio State Family Court Act and Social Services Law:- Abuse includes physical or emotional harm, sexual exploitation, or any act that causes injury to a child.
- Maltreatment refers to harm, either physical or emotional, inflicted on a child, including neglect of their needs.
- Neglect is the failure to provide necessary care, supervision, or resources to a child, leading to harm or risk of harm.
- Behavioral and Environmental Indicators of Abuse
Participants will learn to distinguish between behavioral and environmental characteristics of an abusive parent or caretaker, including:- Behavioral signs such as emotional instability, substance abuse, or erratic behavior.
- Environmental signs like poor living conditions, isolation from community support, and a lack of resources.
- Physical and Behavioral Indicators
The course will cover specific physical and behavioral indicators that may point to different forms of abuse:- Physical abuse: Unexplained bruises, burns, or other injuries.
- Maltreatment: Emotional withdrawal or developmental delays.
- Neglect: Malnutrition, poor hygiene, and unmet medical needs.
- Sexual abuse: Unexplained injuries, inappropriate knowledge of sexual behavior, and difficulty sitting or walking.
- Reasonable Cause to Suspect
Attendees will understand the legal threshold of “reasonable cause to suspect,” which is based on credible evidence or observations that lead to the belief that a child may be at risk of harm. - Reporting Procedures
Clear instructions on how to properly document and report suspected abuse, including contacting local child protective services or law enforcement, will be outlined to ensure timely and effective intervention. - Intervention Strategies
The training offers practical strategies for intervening based on the specific type of abuse or neglect:- For physical abuse, ensuring immediate medical care and involving law enforcement.
- For maltreatment, providing support plans and mental health resources.
- For neglect, connecting families with community resources.
- For sexual abuse, ensuring the child’s safety and supporting investigations.
